“Old Mattress. Just Needs Dumping.”

That was all the customer said.

They were moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up in Ang Mo Kio and wanted us to collect a queen-sized mattress. “Slightly stained but intact,” the message read. “Can you help dispose?”

No problem, we replied. We’ve handled hundreds of old mattresses in Singapore — water-damaged ones, moldy ones, even some with missing springs. But nothing prepared us for what happened next.

We arrived at the unit right on schedule. The mattress was leaning against the wall near the corridor, tightly bound in clear cling wrap. That already raised some flags — usually, cling wrap is used to contain something. Smells. Mess. Or worse… pests.

We began to carry it down the first flight of stairs. That’s when it happened.

A slow thump from inside. Then another. And then… something shifted.

Our guys dropped it — immediately. Because mattresses don’t move on their own.

At first, we thought maybe it was just a trapped rodent or a lizard. Singapore’s warm climate makes these infestations common. But as we carefully slit the plastic wrap open from the side, what we saw gave us chills:

A large, half-squashed rat, crawling slowly between the foam layers. It had chewed its way in and made a nest inside the padding. The interior was damp, shredded, and stank of rot.

Mattresses with pest infestations are not just gross — they’re health hazards. Here's why our team had to refuse the disposal:

  • Contaminated mattresses cannot be transported legally with clean loads

  • Pests can spread to our vehicles or infect other customers' items

  • Improperly wrapped items with live infestations may violate NEA waste transport regulations

🛑 1. Check Before Wrapping

Never seal a mattress without checking for pests, mold, or rodent activity.

We always request clear, unwrapped photos of junk items before quoting. If something looks off, we’ll flag it before it becomes a scene.

Wrapping up an infested mattress in plastic might seem like a good idea, but it just hides the real problem. We don’t provide pest removal — and we won’t risk spreading it to others.

Our team is here to help Singapore residents dispose of bulky junk items quickly and safely — but not illegally. If a mattress is badly infested, you’ll need pest control first. After it's cleared and wrapped, we can quote again and remove it responsibly.
